Central Richland is the original Hanford town. In 1943 the federal government took a village of a few hundred people and built housing for tens of thousands, using a set of standardised plans that residents nicknamed the “Alphabet Houses” — the A, B, F, H, L, R and Y types and their variants, twenty-two designs in all.

Eighty years on, most of them are still lived in, and servicing them is unlike servicing anything else in the Tri-Cities. Young’s Heating and Cooling has worked on these houses since 2004, and the useful thing about a standardised plan is that once you have worked on one, you have a very good idea of what is behind the wall in the next.
