Evaporative Coolers, and Why That June Changed People’s Minds
An evaporative cooler — a swamp cooler — works by pulling outside air through wet pads. The water evaporates, which takes heat out of the air, and a big fan pushes the cooled air into the house. In a dry climate like ours it is remarkably effective for the electricity it uses, typically a fraction of what refrigerated cooling costs to run, and for decades it was a perfectly sensible way to cool a Tri-Cities house.
Its limitation is built into how it works. Evaporative cooling can only take the air down toward the wet-bulb temperature, and the drier the air the further that is. On a normal 95°F day with low humidity, a well-maintained cooler will deliver air in the seventies and the house will be comfortable. On a 112°F day, or on one of the muggier afternoons we get after a thunderstorm, the same machine simply cannot get there — and because it works by pushing a large volume of outdoor air through the house, you also have to leave windows cracked, which means the dust and smoke of a Tri-Cities summer come in with it. June 2021 was the demonstration. A lot of households discovered in one week that their cooler was fine for the summer they used to have and not for the one they now get.
So the conversion is a common job for us, and it is worth understanding what it involves before anyone quotes it. Refrigerated cooling needs a sealed house rather than a ventilated one, and it needs ductwork designed for it — a swamp cooler typically dumps air through a single large ceiling register, which is nothing like a distributed supply-and-return system. Sometimes the existing furnace ductwork can carry it, sometimes it needs work, and in some houses a ductless system serving the rooms that matter is a far better answer than rebuilding a duct network. None of that is a reason to hesitate; it is a reason to have somebody look at the house rather than quote a box. Where a cooler is still doing its job and the household is happy with it, we will also just service it and say so.
