That Three-Prong Outlet May Not Actually Be Grounded

Older houses were wired with two-conductor cable — a hot and a neutral, and no separate ground — and fitted with two-prong outlets to match. As three-prong plugs became universal, a very common piece of DIY work over the following decades was to swap the two-prong outlets for three-prong ones. The plugs fit. Nothing looks wrong. And in a great many cases there is no ground conductor behind the outlet at all, so the third prong connects to nothing.

That matters because of what the ground is for. It is the path that fault current takes if a live conductor touches the metal case of an appliance — a path that lets enough current flow to trip the breaker immediately, instead of leaving the case energised and waiting for someone to touch it.
